Fellow kilo coin stackers... I need some pack n' stack suggestions for the absolute most compact way to pack Perth Mint kilo coins to maximise utilisation of a security box while still keeping them manageable and protected from capsule scuffing. Are there specific types of plastic containers that people have found useful? Or trays? Boxes? Do you wrap the coins? Or put them in plastic/paper bags? Help!
The greater the surface area of the capsule/s, the chances of the capsule get scratches are highly. Put them in special plastics preferably new bags. Then store on top of each other in between bubble wraps. These plastics envelope can be obtain at $2 shop - Reject Shop, King Kong, even News agents. Hope these will help.
Vacuum seal them and just stack them. Unless you want to get those boxes like the ones used for the Noah Ark kilos.
If space is an issue a single layer of soft cotton will do the trick. You can buy cotton bags that will fit them on eBay for $0.5 that will do the trick nicely. Plastic glad bags will be much better than nothing though.
Any encapsulated coin 5-oz & larger gets put in a size-appropriate plastic ziploc-type bag, with the air squeezed out. Sometimes good ones are even provided at the time of purchase. Just be careful of the harder plastic "zipper" whenever they go in or out. Good enough for me, anyway. I really hate scratched capsules.
I used to make cute little bubble wrap or foam pouches and they stacked well but was easier to buy the kilo coin cases. Best way I've found is to stack them the way they arrive to bullion dealers- flat packs of cardboard with each one having it's own cut out home. Bit of a waste of space but good way to rack 'em and stack 'em. The Noah's Ark boxes are awesome for what you want to do but maybe not the best if you're using an SDB due to limited space.
Those Noah's Ark boxes are really nice. But I need to get my recent coins into a SDB so optimal packing is a priority.
Interesting problem to have! Now I understand why some people stick to gold. But in all seriousness perhaps you can check if your SDB has larger compartments?
Wouldn't be posting that kind of pic on a public forum... If you're in Syd it would be easier to go to Guardian Vaults and pay a few hundred for a much larger storage space.
pete, have you considered clear acrylic tube? http://www.tapplastics.com/product/plastics/plastic_rods_tubes_shapes/clear_cast_acrylic_tubing/462
^ Pete, are those 1 kg coins stacked on on top of each other? As for stacking them: I advise you to avoid using plastics, like those nylon-like bubble-padded materials. Because: on the longer term they may leave marks on the plastics. I've seen such stick-marks in the past. Where they stick, they may leave lines that look like spots and then it will be nearly impossible or even impossible to remove them. Plastics sometimes react with each other - some do melt into each other. Not the case of coin capsules and bubble-padded plastic bags, I guess, but others might react with each other chemically. I'd advise you to use soft sheets, like special soft (even artificial) tissues. Some are like textiles, others are similar to the material of soft clothers. You can wrap your kilo coins in them tightly, so that less space is taken off. Then, you can secure the soft wrapper with rubber bands. Don't use paper tissues, they tend to erode, tear into small pieces and you'll be left with a mess. The problem with these kilo coins - I call them "discs" is that they take up a lot of space and leave a lot of unused space around (not having corners), so if you keep them inside a box, they might want to roll here and there...
I think it is sorta funny that folks are somewhat oppossed to owning the lunar kilos because apparently they can be minted until 2019. The reason I find it funny, is this implies that they are in plentiful supply. I hate to burst your bubble, but they are very hard to come by, so, though maybe it is true they can mint until 2019, I hardly doubt they are minting the older years very often, if at all...APMEX never seems to have any supply of the older years. And if they get one in, it's simply that, 1. Keep stacking them silver pete!!
