A galvanic Potential will exist between Silver and the following materials, it's unlikely your Silver will touch any of these but good to remember..... Silver as an Anode Dissimilar Cathode - (0.5V) Silver lead solder, (0.56V)Lead, Steel, (0.7V)Aluminium Alloys, (0.77V)Aluminium Cadmium, (0.77V)Galvanised Steel, (1.09V)Zinc Based Alloys, (1.11V)Zinc and (1.59V)Magnesium Alloy Galvanic Potential will cause corrosion over time Cheers Hiho
Excellent page on silver care http://www.silversmithing.com/care.htm#Advice I can add: do not store silver in PVC piping.
Yes, the chloride is the nasty one here. Polyvinylchloride (PVC) over time leaves a green, adherent, acidic, sticky, slightly scummy, scuzz discoloration on silver. Note: some people claim that the gases aren't released from the pipe like from the soft flips that ruin coins YMMV. You may want to try ABS piping (ABS = Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) See example below: ABS is easier to glue, using a 1-step process vs the PVC 2-step process.
