Got them off from a flea market for quite sometime, wondering if they are fakes. peace dollar weigh 26.15g, morgan dollar weigh 25.70g. thickness of coins is not larger than 3mm, and diameter is 38mm. (used a ruler to estimate) peace dollar morgan dollar I also did a ping test on the 2 coins by balancing one of the coin on my finger tip, and using the other to knock against it. http://soundcloud.com/sohbk8/junk-silver-or-fake-silver Please help me to conclude if they are of any silver? Posted it a another forum, but have limited response to judge.
Peace weighs 27.73 Morgan 26.73 They both are a tad light, but it could very well be your scales. There is usually a bigger discrepancy with fakes.
but i weigh my philharmonic silver which is right at 31.1grams. the only reason about the difference in weight could be, that some silver is scrapped off its rim. their rims look like this from the side: (contoured on the 90 angle) _______ __________ (_______) instead of |__________| but anyone can like show me a pic of the reeds on this coin? i felt my reeds look weird.
nicwinner, what make you think so? someone from another forum, pointed out the "3" and the lack of dots for "IN GOD WE TRUST". but i wonder what material it is made up of.
Id say they are both real, both show the traits of being the real deal, what would make you think they werent.. the weights sound legit given wear (although the morgan is in an XF state) Innocent until proven guilty for common date morgans and peace dollars.. if your talking a CC immediatley be suspicious. 1for1
shall do a specific gravity test as recommended by mattew 1for1, the cheap price and the owner have 2 of each coin with the same year on display. make me loose confident in my purchase. ahha.
well, the problem in coin's rim, thanks. and If I am not wrong, they have no silver content. have a ask with your local coin dealer they wanna buy or not. cheers
Well for my 2c worth I think they are fakes ,too clean for 1 Yearly 90 years old & if they were that clean ,they would have less scratches on them & probably slabbed maybe I have a fake like that somewhere around here Find a magnet of any sort If it picks it up ,it aint silver Mine tested as 90% copper & no silver at all Just chrome plated That's what that looks like to me Chrome plating
thanks for your feedback, nicwinner. i dont know if i have illustrated the rim's well, the shape looks more like a rounded " [ " than " ( ". spannermonkey, its not magnetic. and if its copper it should be much lighter in weight?
Well it looks like a real one than If it's not magnetic ,it could only either be Aluminium or silver Maybe find a jeweller you can trust or find a dealer with an XRF machine & see if they will buy it If you have any others check them for size compared to each other ,or again find a dealer who has onw The fake Panda I have ,I only noticed recently is not not as wide as the reall one I have & is thicker than the real one They can never get the dimensions right if they weight is correct The fake Panda weighs up but is thicker & not as wide as an original
the problem is i only have one of each. ahha. and i dont really know of any LCS around. and silver in singapore is much less valued. most pawnshop wont take silver too.
did the specific gravity test on the peace, and it is 8.411 so its a fake! morgan is 8.478! congrats on those who spotted it as a fake and based on http://www.csgnetwork.com/specificgravmettable.html it is "silver", NICKEL silver!
The rim on the Morgan is raised too much. But its a very good copy. An easy non destructive test you can do anywhere is with a magnet, rare earth preferably. The ones in computer hard drives (N52's) are awesome. Nickel and Iron are both ferromagnetic at room temp and if enough nickel in the coin, it will pull. and would account for the weight loss for such a low circulation coin.
