I have the option to get some of these a little below spot. Any thoughts would be very appreciated. I gather there are plenty floating about. http://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces7947.html
Funny that I was looking at what a gulden was yesterday! I heard it first in the 1930s film House of the Rothschilds starring Boris Karloff where he bargains with the tax collector over how many gulden they owe. 1 gulden = 1/24th of a Cologne mark of silver. Cologne Mark ~ 233 grams. So 1 gulden from the 1700s in Southern Germany was equal to approx 10 grams of silver.
Then they went from 10g per guilder in the 1700s to 1.8g per guilder in 1973. That's not a surprise. According to the wiki article they have been lowering both the gold and silver content of the gold guilders and silver guilders since the 1300s after starting off with the same gold content as a Venetian ducat. The site I quoted above says mintage was 4.5 million for the 10 guilder coin with 100k proof coins. I wonder how you can tell the difference.
