The trouble is, we look at the government of the day and think, "These guys are crooks." but then look at the opposition and say, "Damn."

If there is hope of change via the current democratic system, it is in the senate. There people can gain influence and exposure with a minority vote. It is the only house that can't be totally dominated by the 2 party system.

That's why it's disappointing to see guys like Hinch, Xenophon, Katter and parties like One Nation and the Greens in there taking up space when I think if the sheeple (thx Pete) got their act together we'd get some people in the senate with a clue who could hold the lower house to account. In doing so they could gain support and grow and bring respectability back to our democracy...

...oops, I forgot to take my crazy pills this morning :p

The senate was originally set up to protect the rights of State governments...Do you ever see the red or Blue team vote as a block for their state...No! they all vote on party lines...Remember the Tasmanian senator who only gave his vote if there was something in it for his state!

Maybe we could set up a Senate like the one in Ancient Rome? :)

Care to elaborate? Or are you being sarcastic?

I'd suggest a very simple reform for the senate to start with. Remove the state boundaries and let all the votes fall into the one pool. That might give a truer representation of the diversity across the whole Australian society. After all, it's a Federal institution and more diversity is a good thing, right??

Now where did I put those pills....

That's a great idea. If Lord Wentworth is still PM by then, I'd like to drop by this new Roman-style senate next year, say on the 15th March? :D
