Have people got advice in investing into rare coins? Is there particular coins that do well and others that don't? What would be a good coin to invest in or is it just to risky? Thanks for any help.
If you are asking those questions, you are years away from being knowledgeable enough to buy rare coins. You will need to learn what to buy and when to buy. Considering the economic times ahead, I would just slowly educate myself and wait for the right opportunity. I don't participate in the Panda forum, but I believe there is a poster named Tam that has mentioned buying rare coins. You might ask him for places to begin learning.
Rare coins are a scary business overall. I know nothing about them, but this site http://www.bluesheet.com.au/ has a few people who do. GP said something ages ago that has always stuck with me. Words to the effect: "Buy numismatic valued as close to bullion price as possible". Good advice I thought.
I invest heavily into rare Panda coins. I've found that it's not that hard to learn, though it does require some research. But with people like 25Grizzlies, PandaCollector, Comeaux, Fishball, Tamo42, (Badon) and many others, it's lots of fun and hopefully profitable. This is one of my favourite rare Panda coins... it's a German Panda
Hi Dusty, I can't remember but I think you are in WA. Have you considered investing in Gold Sovereigns. There are many varieties and plenty would be considered 'rare'. There is also a heap of information readily available on the Google. My dream is to put together a full 'Perth Mint' sovereign subset in mint condition. Basically, when it comes to rare coins it is the grading that is all important so this is the skill you will need to develop. There is also a lot of information about grading - the funny/annoying thing about grading is that it is so suggestive. Example, a 1899 Perth mint sovereign in Unc condition would easily fetch upwards of $1,000 (probably a lot more). This same coin in Fine condition can be got close to spot. Putting together a set of these sovereigns is pretty fun (chasing down the ones you want/need) - also, you could start with getting coins in EF or aUnc (can still be got close to spot) and then once you have practiced looking at these coins and grading you can trade them up to Uncirculated (they are highly liquid gold after all). The beauty of this is that it is fairly low risk way of cutting teeth on numis - the biggest risk is of coming across fakes or jewellers copies. Learning to spot these is part of the learning process.
Speak to: Andrew Crellin http://www.sterlingcurrency.com.au/ In your part of the world and whose life revolves around high value coins. Highly regarded within numismatic circles in Australia (and OS).
He wrote the book on sovereigns - literally. http://www.sterlingcurrency.com.au/items/australias-sovereigns-book-2005-perth-mint Note - this is a link to his site to show the book. You might get it cheaper of eBay at auction if you are interested I met him and spoke to him at the ANDA show. He was really nice actually - lent me his loupe and taught me a few things about sovereign grading.
Yeah that's a BS price though. I bought a book off eBay that I thought was this book. It turned out to be a book of poetry Fortunately though it wasn't in the $100's :/
Thanks guys but it's definaly a hard area to invest in. Some many coins and dates and conditions I just got lost,
