http://search.ebay.com/251122832257 http://search.ebay.com/271030314923 For some unknown reasons, I love this 1984 PRC 35th Anniversary proof set. It came in at least 2 packaging that I know of. One is 3 pcs set in plastic case, another is 2pcs in plastic + 1 pcs in a card. These proof set were minted in Shenyang, and Shanghai. The Mint never disclosed the real mintage. It is said that Shanghai Mint never release the proof set due to a major design error. It was in 2007 (if I remembered correctly) collector discovered the Shanghai Mint proof set, and price jump within very short time. 50 sets were found in a Shanghai dealer's inventory. I believe this Shanghai Mint proof set is one of the most (if not the most) expensive set of modern China regular commemorative proof coins.
I like the third coin, if only because it looks like the tower is trying to fly like the birds. Any story behind this one? Did you buy both?
Thanks for posting these nice coins Low it is really cool seeing coins that I'm not familiar with and have not seen before. I think you have more knowledge of Chinese coins than any other members. It appears that sometimes it takes a special coin to really peak your interest so these coins must have something unusual associated with them. Is there demand in China for these coins? I bought a 1980 (I think) set of Chinese coins from a SS member several months ago, a purchase outside of what I would typically buy so on my next trip the safety deposit box I want to get pictures so you can possibly give me some information on them. So yea congratulations on your new purchase very nice !
Many thanks Comeaux. Yes this is popular proof set and there is good demand in China. Selling price in China is about $140 - $180. This is one special set that is both culturally and historically significant. Love to look at your 1980 set when you have the photos. Yes I bought both. The design of the second coin came from this painting. http://news.qq.com/a/20090807/002118.htm There is a nice writeup in Chinese, if you can ask someone to translate http://www.zgqw.com/show_7239.htm
