Claymore (M18A1) buried with sunny side up. Of course its just a suggestion; I don't have access to military munitions.
Would it be a good idea to dig the hole 2metres deep, bury your silver in your preferred storage utensil. Cover with 1 metre of dirt. Then place scrap metal at this level and then cover with dirt. To get a bearing on where the hole is pick 2 landmarks that are unlikely to be moved. Measure and get the co-ordinates (say 5mx7n)..Or bury them in a tank if you have one....keeps the water pure too. Apparently that only works if the silver is 9999 or higher purity (maples or andeans) and the water needs to be constantly circulating. This topic came up in discussion at one of the Pikey swapmeets
Two metres deep is a mammoth task. I guess if you had some machinery it would be ok but even to dig a small hole that deep would require something more than just an ordinary spade. Unless it was a very wide hole. You wouldn't want to have to dig it up in hurry either. You could probably use a post hole digger or something similar to dig the hole but when you came to retrieve it you would have to go a bit more careful to make sure you didn't trash the container. The weight of the soil on top of the container would also cause problems, especially when wet. You would need to have something else inside the container to push outwards to prevent it from collapsing. Depends on the water table too, 2 metres could be well below the line making retrieval extra difficult. The book I mentioned recommended burying some road kill with a metal dog tag and collar above your stash, just to put the casual searcher off.
