Not quite mate.. $265 million divide by 23 million = just over $11 per head. :)

Saw adverts for the new Australian made Holden Volt last night. Fully electric (with a backup petrol generator). Cutting edge tech that may upset the old Prius dominance. But $60k apparently :(

    It's stupid isn't it?

Rest of the worlds car manufacturers are trying to make cutting edge CHEAPER cars.

Whilst Holden gets bail out after bail out, then jacks up the price on theirs.

Perhaps gov bailouts are more profitable than making cars?

Perhaps Governments are the only one's likely to buy them in quantity in Australia and they are not price sensitive.

    It isn't a Holden bail-out, it's a union dues bail-in.

The ads may lead you to believe it's Australian made but it's not, it is made in the USA, and General Motors loses money on every one sold.

Thanks wrcmad, you could have also made it: "Government Motors".

The costs of developing these new technology cars will probably never be recovered, apart from Toyota's Prius as it is the only one that sells.

Before they recover their development costs the technologies for 'low emission' cars will have changed again and be obsolete. The Mitsubishi iMiev is already on it's way out 5 years after going on sale. A sales failure.. Interesting to read motoring journalists say what they really think of it in their articles now that they aren't trying to sell it or being paid to try sell it. They all seem to hate it.
