Hi all just wondering if anyone can help identify and value this 1798 halpenny for a friend It was found in sandunes in Queensland about 40 years ago Sorry about the shit photos Source: [imgz=http://forums.silverstackers.com/uploads/11862_dsc01582.jpg][/imgz]
Hmm... 1) Don't look period 2) Doesn't fit any coins from then Great Britain. (who else used "half penny" - no other groups to my knowledge) 3) Unusual it doesn't have any legend 4) Coin surface has (a) features of polishing & re toning (b) copper planchet 5) Character and subject matter are off If someone were to show me that coin, I would have said... looks like it's a fantasy coin from a magic the gathering set or something like that and someone had a play with a bit sulfur in a beaker. How did I do? Miloman for 20 points?
Hi milo have no idea on these things but thanks for your input. I have no reason to believe my friend is saying this is something it is not so I thought I would give SS a try as the site has a lot of knowledgable members Cheers Rick
Didn't realise that you opened two threads about the same coin ... Posted a reply in the other thread as well. Anyway ,I found this ... a bit of a ditto to the other posts here. http://coinquest.com/cgi-bin/cq/coins?main_coin=14740&main_fnd_id=93138
It's a fairly common "Conder" token and they are often found with lustre and original red and they are reasonably inexpensive despite their age. I have one with the same obverse (the druid) but a different reverse.
