After doing some research, I've found that this refinery had closed in 1987, and that since then has [apparently] gained some intrinsic value. Does anyone have any idea of how much I could potentially get for it? http://i.imgur.com/oHFlL.jpg is a picture of the gold itself. I've found two sales of this type of bar on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Oz-GOLD-B...9467&pid=100033&prg=1011&rk=1&#ht_1642wt_1185 http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Oz-GOLD-B...9467&pid=100033&prg=1011&rk=1&#ht_1642wt_1185 So basically, is there any way of determining intrinsic value of something like this? Thanks
Well the intrinsic value is stamped right one it - one troy ounce. I think you're referring to collector premium - to be honest very very few cast gold bars attract any collector premium, unless they are historical. Those "Buy It Now" prices on eBay are not indicative of current market value - there is no way there is a 55% premium on those bars.
I was, sorry. Then is there much of a way to be able to get an indication of collector's premium otherwise?
Just had a look at ag_n_au_oz sales tread and I think I have discovered another type of Golden West Bar. The stamping on his bar looks like its in relief; pretty sure I have one that is incuse Will get pics taken as soon as I can. If there are other collectors of Golden West bars, please check your bars as I would be interested to know whether there are indeed two types. http://forums.silverstackers.com/topic-59972-wts-gold-and-silver.html
Just confirmed that there are at least two separate types of Golden West 1oz bars. Meaningless to most people but important for us rare bar collectors as it actually make these bars much rarer since the entire bar mintage is now divided between the two types. You can see the two different types here; http://forums.silverstackers.com/topic-12608-rare-collectable-and-vintage-gold-bars-page-10.html If anyone has a bar that is different in appearance to these two types, please post here. Cheers
