Money might not grow on trees, but scientists have confirmed that gold is found in the leaves of some plants.
Scientists from Australia’s national science agency, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), have proved that the leaves of certain eucalyptus trees contain minute amounts of the precious metal that have been naturally absorbed.

Eucalypts in the Kalgoorlie region of Western Australia and the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia are drawing up water containing gold particles from the earth via their roots and depositing it in their leaves and branches.

One of the authors of the paper, the CSIRO geochemist Dr Mel Lintern, said some eucalyptus root systems dived down deeper than 30m, through much of the sediment that sits on top of solid ore-bearing rock. The tree acts “as a hydraulic pump … drawing up water containing the gold”, he said.

“As the gold is likely to be toxic to the plant, it is moved to the leaves and branches where it can be released or shed to the ground.”

The scientists have known from their laboratory experiments that trees have the ability to absorb gold but this is the first time they have proved that it is actually happening in nature.

The particles of gold in the trees are tiny – about one-fifth the diameter of a human hair – and invisible to the human eye.

The CSIRO used its advanced x-ray imaging capability at the Australian Synchrotron in Melbourne to locate and see the gold in the leaves.

Despite the size of the particles, the CSIRO said the discovery could offer an opportunity for mineral exploration, as the presence of gold at the surface could indicate gold ore deposits buried tens of metres underground.

Resources companies will not abandon their highly advanced exploration technology in favour of the gold trees but with a single exploratory drillhole costing tens of thousands of dollars, anything that assists the search for minerals is useful.

There we go Greenie's.....go pick up the ground layer leaf litter which will help reduce bush fire intensity and make some $ out of gold harvesting without digging a hole in some barren wasteland...win win...No wait. Tim (aka Flim) Flanney will find a way to link leaf litter harvesting to global warming

Made me think of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe author Douglas Adams in one of his sequels, when the marketing consultants decide to use leaves on the trees as money.

“If," ["the management consultant"] said tersely, “we could for a moment move on to the subject of fiscal policy. . .”
“Fiscal policy!" whooped Ford Prefect. “Fiscal policy!"
The management consultant gave him a look that only a lungfish could have copied.
“Fiscal policy. . .” he repeated, “that is what I said.”
“How can you have money,” demanded Ford, “if none of you actually produces anything? It doesn't grow on trees you know.”
“If you would allow me to continue.. .”
    Ford nodded dejectedly.
“Thank you. Since we decided a few weeks ago to adopt the leaf as legal tender, we have, of course, all become immensely rich.”
Ford stared in disbelief at the crowd who were murmuring appreciatively at this and greedily fingering the wads of leaves with which their track suits were stuffed.
“But we have also,” continued the management consultant, “run into a small inflation problem on account of the high level of leaf availability, which means that, I gather, the current going rate has something like three deciduous forests buying one ship’s peanut."
Murmurs of alarm came from the crowd. The management consultant waved them down.
“So in order to obviate this problem,” he continued, “and effectively revalue the leaf, we are about to embark on a massive defoliation campaign, and. . .er, burn down all the forests. I think you'll all agree that's a sensible move under the circumstances."
The crowd seemed a little uncertain about this for a second or two until someone pointed out how much this would increase the value of the leaves in their pockets whereupon they let out whoops of delight and gave the management consultant a standing ovation.”

All of the precious metals can be found in trace ammounts in tree leaves as long as they are present in the soil the tree is growing in.
Their is a bacteria/micro organism that actually poops out gold believe it or not.
PMs can also come in another form than a metal. When the PM loses an electron/s it changes form , shrinks and becomes a white powder/salt. This powder/salt form of PM is all around us in the soil , rocks , sand , air and fresh and salt water , food etc. I have read that it is estimated there could be up to 10,000 times the ammount of PMs in this form on the planet as compared to PMs in metal form. Some people claim to be able to convert this form of PM back to metal form. If this was done on a large scale it could have the potential to crash the world economy....

I looked at seabed mining of thermal outlets a few years. At this time way to costly to pursue and potential for ocean damage can not be defined, but it shows the earth is putting more metals into the above earth crust layer every day.
