So I posted pics the other day of a 1oz gold panda I bought, and I decided to check the weight... We have a very sceintific scale at work, and the weight came to 31.15gr. I was expecting 31.10 Is this due to the 999 gold content, or are gold coins always atleast 31.1 (but could be slightly over? All the other measurements seem fine. What other weights have people seen around the 31.1gr range? I am having it XRF'd this week, but thought I would just post this question for now... I am guessing 0.05gr over is not much to be concerned about.
I would have thought it needs to be slightly over as it is not 100% pure. A troy oz is 31.1034 Your panda is 31.15 x .999 = 31.118 making yours 0.01545 of a gram overweight. Not anything I would be worried about.
The AGW should be at least 1 oz or 31.1034g. I imagine the mint would have a system for rejecting blanks that are below weight and also too far above weight. Your 0.01545g is probably within acceptable tolerance.
