Hi All, I thought I would treat myself this week to a ST Gaudens Gold Double Eagle (graded ef/unc) and was wondering , as it is perhaps more than just a bullion coin, how should it be stored. it is currently in its graded jacket with window? Any experts on keeping these critters? Cheers
My Saint-Gaudens are in Lighthouse capsules - smaller pre-33 I keep in 2x2 cardboard holders in a Numis album. If it's in a holder already and the holder is in new condition I would just leave it intact.
Thanks GP, its in a card with plastic window, but my concern is that as careful as one might be, should it get dropped or something fall on it any type of casing that the card and coin would fit into?
A series of inexpensive clear plastic coins holders which fit together as a capsule to protect the coin inside. They come in a range of diameters made to fit standard coins and usually the diameter is stamped on the rim. One advantage of this type is it is easy to open as there are two rims to grab hold of. An alternative is the Air-Tite capsule which does not have the rim so looks much better BUT they can often be impossible to open without damaging the polished rim.
