Buy them on a bullion basis.

would you say that for a 1/4oz gold coin the price of around $480 and the half $860 sounds ok?

That's probably a bit high on both - on these older Nuggets/Roos I wouldn't want to pay more than say the best bulk price the Perth Mint offers on new coins the same size, currently $465 and $860. Some 1/2oz gold just sold through this forum for much better prices a few days ago.

Check out W Davis price list - that's a good benchmark for random year gold coins. $427 and $846 right now. Realistically a private trade should fall somewhere in between a dealer's buy/sell spread, but probably closer to the dealer sell price.

The problem with W Davis he never has stock. Not even a single gold item from the long list on his website is available for sale. Could spend your entire life calling him every day before you get ten oz kangaroo/nugget/lunar coin from him.
$427 for a oz gold nugget is a fabulous price, but you can not get it, so do not use W Davis as a benchmark because that is well below wholesaler's buy price.

Well sitting in an office literally across the road - his stock changes by the hour. Got to beat the spannermonkey through the door in person to get the good stuff!

Once you realise Peter is an old school "gold is gold" trader rather than a Perth Mint distributor, the business model and pricing makes sense. His live prices are a price list, not a stock list - but you can be guaranteed that's what you will get charged on an item if it's available. I once picked up 1/10oz Lunar Snake proofs in cases for the advertised price of 1/10oz bullion - some might think that's crazy but turnover is everything in this game - if something sits on the shelf for two weeks waiting for a buyer at the "right" price, it's money that could have been better directed elsewhere.
