    Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and I thought I would ask a few questions to get them out of the way. Where can a person source older world coins? I've been dabbling for some time watching individual coins on eBay, generally assessing their rarity through online resources, and only looking at coins that are at least partly hedged by some sort of bullion value. Really, I just aim for nice looking coins from the 18th/19th/20th century that I simply like the look of and are in low mintages. It seems as good a way to collect as any.

Does anybody have any advice as to price guides, or better yet, somewhere in Australia that sells such coins off eBay (whether retail or a private community)?

Morgan Silver Dollars seem to be pretty popular.
Various price guides & posted mintages on a few different websites.
Found some good deals on eBay through auction.

The only price guide is the NGC guide and it seems to undershoot a lot. It's hand for mintages though, much like Numista. I guess I'd like to find something a little more concrete!

Cointrackers, Coinflation, PCGS, Coinstudy, all different price guides.
Prices range on morgans, but majority hover in the $30 range.

Plenty of coin dealers around and they do have online stores where you can look at some.

Continue to learn and be hesitant in assuming "this is a good way as any". I too am a novice but if I were you, I would seek to learn more about "resale" should you invest in a coin which bears any premium.

For a long time the Australian $200 gold coin was less than the price of gold and then parity and now more. Plenty of people "hedged" currency vs. gold price. So yes hedging can be done on both face value and numismatic value.

Knowledge... when applied correctly produces results.
