    Easy lesson:
You can only keep what had been handed in.

That does sound like a logical decision by the court. If the coins were minted in 2016 it’s not likely that the person that buried them has forgotten about them.

Yep, I read this story yesterday. Sad. Mad.

What if he went to a coin shop to sell a few of those coins? He simply could have lived off of them the rest of his life :D

Plus: he could have given them away to the needy. Not necessarily to people on the streets, but he could have given it to charity or could have walked around and
could have given away gifts. A lot of poor people would have been saved.

What if Somali pirates sailed to the shores of Germany to bury their treasure? Then their yacht sunk. Now they're all dead.

5 years later Hans comes across them - but ze Bundesrepublik gets to ze treazha'. :D:D:D

a fool and his money are soon parted... he he he... in this case, we have two separate fools, who were not holding their stack, and as a result, they both ended up owning nada

Just because some pieces were modern does not unclassify them as treasure. Also, because they were intentionally buried and simply did not fall out of somebody's pocket does not mean they were not lost.

The fact the original owner is unknown means they are definitely lost to posterity and such a high value is the definition of treasure. Just because a buccaneer did not bury them in the 16th century is hogwash.

The finder should have kept his mouth shut.

The chance of a lifetime became the regret of the rest of his life.
I'm sure he wakes up and goes to be every morning biting his nails, regretting and wondering whether he could ever come across (or make) that kind of fortune one day.

"King for a day, fool for a lifetime" :D

Shame on you all for wanting to keep the money.

I would have left an IOU for the full amount in the empty hole in the ground!

An *elite* sub-group of us here at Silverstackers have started a "Treasure finders Club." Just PM me for the details, as we have a meet coming up soon (n.b. we are based in Melbourne). In a nutshell, what we do, is between the hours of 1:00am to 4:00am, we use our metal-detectors (our club has 8) to locate lost treasure buried in people's back yards. We wear black clothing. Whoo whee!! You would not believe how much lost treasure we have found in Toorak over the last 3 months, and a lot of it was not even buried very deeply. :)

Whoever comes across lost treasures should ask Silver Stackers' opinions first! :D
