I agree. As a lurcker and occasional contributor I have to say that this subject is something I really want to have a go at. I think we should keep this thread going and a 'group alchemy' (which is the SS version of a group hug) would be a great idea. Any takers?

I wonder if someone got this book :

    Gold Refining - Gajda

It is regarded as THE best for refining, but it is hard to find.

I say what about SilverStackers T-Shirts, each with our own user name on it!

Someone in Melbourne sells half litre bottles of nitric on ebay for $30. Check hydroponics suppliers, they use it for ph adjustment.

We could put a big target on the back as well :)

Probably not best to walk around advertising the fact that you have precious metals. We did discuss a very discrete badge or tie pin a while back but it was thought having a badge with SS written on it might be misconstrued.

Maybe starting with sterling silver (.925) might be easier to learn with, than with 50% silver.

Does an 'acid test' prove you've achieved .999 purity?

The laboratory "Fire Assays" used by mints and mines to prove metal purity are pretty expensive...

I believe the acid test is only as goos as the depth in penetrates.

Maybe similar for xrf. I'm not sure.

I have a cheapie ultrasound machine that seems to do the job pretty well.

I've used it on known bars such as PM 10's and then compared to other silver bars and coins.

    Seems ok.
