    Hi Folks,

    Can someone please give me the correct specs for a Gold 1/2 Oz 2012 Lunar Dragon

    The Perth Mint site (Link http://www.perthmintbullion.com/Buy...mpaign=Brand&gclid=CL6F0eTctKsCFcJKpgodiHd8dg) says it should be 15.554g, 30.60mm wide and 2.50mm thick.

    I bought one a week ago, from Bullion Bourse, to give my daughter for her birthday. Just to check I took out my digital scales (.001g accuracy) and a set of quality dial calipers - I get the following for my coin;

    15.57g, 30.00mm wide and 1.50mm thick.

    Can someone tell me if I am looking at the wrong info?

    I'm trying not think the worst.

    With two different sets of verniers the wascally wabbits measured 29.94mm X 1.54mm and 29.94mm X 1.51mm

    How is that possible? My coin is heavier, 0.6mm less wide and 1mm thinner.

    What's it made of, Plutonium?

    Maggie might be agreeing with you that is what is listed on their website, not what its actual measurements are

    Lunar coins are thinner/taller so it's probably a typo on the website

    I've directed the question to someone from the Perth Mint for clarification - hopefully they can assist.

    The official response is that the published dimensions are correct - they are a MAXIMUM thickness. Conceivably this could arise because of different rim heights that would be inconsequential to the weight of the coin.

    But not by a full millimeter - the rim of the coin I got sent is almost half the thickness of the official Mint specs

    Wouldn't the weight be the most important spec to consider?

    .

    Yes, of course it is - IF the coin I have weighed 9 or 10 grams the answer would be obvious - I got supplied a gold coin almost half as thick as standard, was cheated, and therfore need to take recourse accordingly - but that's not the case.

    The weight I got for my coin is 15.57g - The mint official spec is 15.554g - My scales could easily be off by 0.016g - so let's just call it the same weight as the official coin.

    The Mint has their coin sizing (http://www.perthmintbullion.com/au/Buy-Gold-Coins/1_2oz.aspx?size=17 then click on Lunar) at 30.6mm x 2.5mm and 15.554g

    So I have a coin that weighs the same but is almost half as thick as what the specs say it should.

    I re-check the damn thing last night to make sure I'm not going nuts - it definitely is 1.5mm thick.

    I can't see any answer other than that the Mint specs are wrong.

    using simple maths gold @ 19.30grams = 1000mm^3 (cubic millimetres).

    given that and known diameter = 30.6, 19.3 grams of gold will fit into a cylinder of diameter 30.6mm, at a height of only 1.3598mm.

    ==> 1000 = (3.1415) x (15.3 x 15.3) x 1.3598

    So using simple maths 19.3 grams which is more than 1/2oz cannot have that diameter and 2.5mm height. But since a coin has dips and valleys, it's not a pure flat cylinder.

    Maybe they measure the height at the highest relief point.

    Would be interesting to find out how they spec their measurements.

    Thanks Null.

    It's good to know the coin has the correct dimensions (even that simple math was too complex for me to work out)

    I think the Mint specs are simply wrong - sure the coin is not perfectly flat, but if you look at it edge-on you certainly dont see the Dragon or Queen sticking out half as high as the rim is wide.
