I've seen several recommendations to invest in a set of scales for weighing coins. Does anybody have any suggestions as to recommended models/brands? any types to avoid? Are they all basically the same? Any good places to purchase them?

    thanks

    I recently bought 2 scales (Same model as THUCYDIDES79 post ), 1 was for 500g - 0.01 and 1 for 2000g - 0.1.
Both good value for about $7 each.
What Im looking for now is a Digital Hanging Scale (Fish Scale.) , there are a lot on eBay 40kg - 10g, I'm looking for something with greater accuracy and smaller weights.
I think hanging scales have an addition advantage when you are buying scrap silverware, Rings, Bracelets etc.
Hang the object to be weighed by a fine thread, Gets its dry weight by weighing it in air, then get a second weight by weighing the object when it is submerged in water, - The difference in weight is the weight of the displaced water, Once you know the weight of the displaced water you can work out the volume of the object. Divide the Dry weight by the volume and you can work out the SG or Density. This will give you a good idea if the object is solid sterling silver or some other material that is silver plated
The ones on eBay 40kg - 10g would be okay for silver bars and larger objects, but I want something for the smaller lighter objects.
Anyone know where you can buy such a scale (or - Is my logic all up the crapper.?)

All those will do the job.... a decent brand like a genuine Tanita will cost around $150-$200 for around 300grams.....

That may be but 20 of those cheapo eBay ones for $7 a pop are a lot better deal.

Just be careful and respectfull of/with the little gadget ( after all it weighs to 0.01 grams precision - dont drop coins on them or violent jerks on the balance ) and it will be very decent to its owner.

Of course to the private stacker but when your weighing lots everyday they seem to be a little off :)

I calibrated two sets of el-cheapo $10 eBay scales that Thucky & Spanna alluded to against a $7000 scientific balance they both measured perfectly. I use a known coin weight as a reference before I check coins each time. They are sensitive enough to measure the wearing on some coins.

Dyno with small weights upto 50grms the measurement should be pretty much spot on with a cheapo and expensive scale.....

The problem is when you are weigh 100g, 500g 1kg etc... the cheapies are not the best.

Tanita seem to know their stuff. Thanks for the name drop. I am curious about these devices now and was looking for names of quality manufacturers.

...and any excuse to buy one :)
