Saw this in the Age online. Imagine a 10c deposit on plastic bottles. When you sell a plastic bottle to the recycling depot, do you have to charge them GST? http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/cashforcans-plan-revived-20110303-1bgg1.html
I wouldnt think GST would be applicable because its a deposit, you are not selling them the bottle. They should just bring this in nation wide. It will keep the streets cleaner. Not to mention how power intensive making aluminium is, this alone could reduce power consumption as we would require less bauxite refining.
In Adelaide it is enforced and there is not so much rubbish around I've noticed. I'm all for it. Why should we have to pay to dispose of rubbish. Actually I'm all for going back to glass and banning carcinogenic food containers.
Glass in pubs & clubs should be banned. Bring in refunds ASAP. I made a killing as a youth with this scheme.
They have introduced safety glass into WA pubs and clubs but not compulsory. Very good idea and long overdue. As for the deposit yes I agree, but then who would fund it, us ?
Bottled water should be in glass. It's an environmental disaster and cost of content is next to nothing. Make a lot of kids happy collecting deposit bottles again. It was one of our earners when we were kids. Along with rolls of newspaper sold to the butcher shops. There's also something zen about an item having a value even when empty. The concept that an empty bottle is rubbish and worthless is in microcosm the problem with the consumer society.
Glass is awesome, drinks taste so much better out of it. The main reason I think it is no longer used is because its costs more to transport glass than plastic due to weight and the plastic bottles are a fraction of their size until expanded then filled in a factory.
