This is a whole other debate which may or may not have been discussed in another thread, but IMO Capitalism is only a SHORT term (in terms of the Earth's available resources) way to get a better life - which inevitably comes at the cost of someone elses.

A few points to think of - Why do mining companies exploit third world countries for their resources? (ie. Papua New Guinea gold mines and the destruction of villages caused by overflow/breakage of dams). Why do sweatshops exist? It's an easy way to make more profit - the ultimate goal of the capitalist regime. Small scale we look after each other, but when corporations get involved, the shit starts to fly and the only ones wearing protective suits are the ones with the cash.

Corrupt governments exist because corrupt individuals exist. Don't think the same corrupt government officials don't have their fingers in private enterprise also. Private enterprise is just as corrupt as governments. It just comes in the form of sweat shops, undercutting competitors to reduce competition blah blah blah..the list goes on.

Don't tell me Bunnings under cutting small competitors to squeeze them out isn't nasty and corrupt. Cheap prices come at a cost. A lot of the time the cost is someones job, then life. Joblessness is a great reason for suicide.

Corporations generally have monopolies because of the cosy relationship they have with GOVERNMENT. This is actually fascism, and it exists in the USA, and the rest of the west, including Australia.

I hate to burst your bubble, but our markets are pretty dam far from being capitalist thanks to government meddling and intervention. True capitalism involves minimal government meddling = something this country knows nothing about.

Business in bed with corrupt government = worst combination.

By the way, have you noticed how hard it is for anyone to compete with Bunnings, Coles, Woolworths etc. Bit hard to compete when government won't even give you permission to open a store - even worse when the established companies are using regulations to prevent the entry of competitors. Big business loves big government - it keeps the barriers to entry high.

Also, have you noticed that pretty much all the 'sweat shops' that you refer to are located in countries with dictatorial governments and low individual freedom. Hmmmm, I wonder if government officials are benefiting from this situation?

Anyway, I totally agree with your sentiments in your OP PPSS. I just don't equate the negative behaviors that you describe with capitalism.

From what I have seen in history so far, the more dictatorial and/or the more socialist a society is, the worse off it's citizens are. True capitalism is nothing more than individual freedom and the respect of rights.
