Crikey. We better get more paper silver underway to cover the shortfall.

When exactly did it happen? We're the markets still open?

10% of US silver supply... which is the mandated form of silver for US silver eagles - has to be US produced silver.

Ouch. This *should* see a rebound in silver prices tomorrow, but who the turtle knows in this market.

    :)

Couldn't really see it in the earlier posts on this...it was just a single pic. But looking at those new pics you'd have to admit, at best, there was only another 10-15% left in the pit design. If you guestimate how much of that slip material from the slope is now in the bottom of the pit... you can easily assume it was pretty close to the end of production...opencut wise at least.

Looking at the size of those dump trucks (they'd have to be 200 tonners for an operation that size) 10-15% would've still been a few years of work. But now they've got years of work to strip all that overburden before they reach the ore again... and even then there might not be much left. My bet is that this is a show stopper :(

N.B. they must've been in a hurry to get out... they left the fully loaded trucks at the bottom of the pit... must've high tailed it out of there in light vehicles.

Listened to a US TV report on the incident - a mine manager was saying they thought they had parked those trucks "out of harms way" - the slip travelled further into the pit than expected.

Well that reinforces my assumption that the pit base was a lot deeper. You can see how the flow has jostled the trucks around... they wouldn't have been parked up like that.

It is only 0.6% of the annual silver mined - won't make much of an impact

Guys, I'm serious, but this may be the actual proof we need.

If you copy the second of hammer's image and zoom into the the top right hand corner 3000x - look who's watching all smug and self-righteous.

It's either that or something else.
