Hi all, Nabbed this one today for an absolute bargain. Ironically, I have no idea what it may be worth. :/ This sounds very naive, but I am not knowledgable with potential numi values of old coins like this. I just know what the gold content is. How do I know I scored a bargain... I know what spot is. I have done some searches, but it seems it may need grading to increase it's value... is this true? Any opinion would be appreciated. 1885 gold double eagle:
The pelican will know. Nice coin btw "S" for San Francisco mint, and that's the limit of my knowledge
From what I can see it isn't a rare one. Seems a good version though. Anything with CC "Carson City" the're the ones you want
Less than spot price and weighs over an ounce. Not bad. But it's not pure gold, that's evident. You should look up the carats. I'm not sure whether there are more variants of this one... I don't want to say anything from this far away, but it's possible it's 90 % gold, maybe even less. Thes cost around 2,500 - 2,900 $ in coin shops, similar prices on eBay with PCGS coin slabs. Numismatic value adds to it. If you're lucky, you could earn up to 2 times the price you bought it for. Yours doesn't look less shiny than the ones I've researched on the market, so you seem to have a good grab...
Thanks TH. The listed specs on this coins are: 90%Au, 33.4g, 0.9625oz. I suspect I should get it slabbed.... but ATM it is a great fondler.
In that condition it's probably not worth the effort in getting it slabbed, like you said it wants to be held. $2250 - $2400 I suspect is the range it falls in, keep in mind that's coming from someone who'd probably take it off ya if you wanted to sell it at the lower end of my estimate or pass at the higher end. EDIT: having said that, noobs on ebay might see it slabbed and pay far more than they should just because it's behind plastic - seen that happen many times.
Thanks Roman. Appreciate the estimate. That opinion aligns with my thinking - same price estimate I gave it in it's current condition too. I think I might continue fondling for a while...
One more thing: if you intend to invest in gold, then I'd do the following (if I were you): 1.since this is a numismatic coin, it could be worth a lot more than "pure gold conent", so you should consider getting it slabbed and graded 2.sell it after having done so... but only after a strong bull run, so that you get a good price for it 3.then with the money obtained (I think you could get 50-100 % more over spot, but certainly at least 15-20 % with this coin), buy new 24 k pure (99.99 % gold) bullion coins or bullion bars Because there's not better precious metal investment than bullion bars. But maybe you just like the coin, perhaps you'd like to have it in your collection
WHOA! HOLD YOUR HORSES! Do some research... 1885 Philadelphia - Mintage 828 - VF $16,856 - UNC $104,292 1885 Carson City - Mintage 9450 - VF $5,662 - UNC $33,658 1885 San Francisco - Mintage 683,500 - VF $1,936 - UNC $2,684 Either way - I'd suggest getting it slabbed & graded by NGC or the other bunch ASAP x ps - I'm dead jealous - Well done mate
If you get is slabbed surely that would add almost a quarter of its value onto it. From experience I have had two quarter eagles that 1900s that i had slabbed and the value increased greatly from ms60-ms62
I just checked the NGC price guide, 1885 $20 Gold: Fine $5820, ms60 $72,150 - Mintage: 828 1885 $20 CC Gold: Fine $2630, ms60 $21,780 - Mintage: 9,450 1885 $20 S Gold: Fine $2140, ms60 $2,350 - Mintage: 683,500 So if yours S from the mintmark. Still great coin.
