    Or it could be just another run-up story like 'Silver prices to spike with increasing use in solar panels'

    Platinum is so expensive that there'll be a real financial incentive (a catalyst*) to seek cheaper alternatives.

    Yes, there are alternatives being developed.

    There is a general trend of replacing critical materials with abundant materials to make them cheap.

    Some I have heard preform better than platinum as a catalyst.

    Time will tell though. I have a webpage on the supply and demand of platinum if you are interested (up until 2013).
