I was wondering if anyone knows a source of information that would tell me what the most sought after/rare Australian pre-decimal coins are?

I understand that grading plays a huge part in numi value, but assuming a high grade, which pre-decimal coins are worth the most?

We all know about the 1930 penny, but I understand there are a few others. I'm not interested in gold coins though.

Really, I just want to look through my very small collection and see if anything is valuable. I highly doubt it though.

If the list is fairly short, i'd be grateful if someone could just list a few coins for me.

So far I gather that a 1930 penny, a 1933 florin, and a 1923 halfpenny (i think) are all rare. Any others?

Greg McDonald's Australian Coins and Banknote guide should be out any day now, so great timing, it will have every coin and approx value you could ever want
    my rough price guide

    1923 Half Penny $1500 aUNC
    1925 Penny $350 EF
    1930 Penny $22500 EF
    1932 -33 Florin $400-$12000 UNC
1934-35 Melbourne Centenary Florin $750 UNC
    1937 Crown $50 UNC
    1938 Crown $250 aUNC
    1946 Penny $250 VF

there are overdate 3d 6d etc but i only collect the above. The prices are recent selling levels for VF-aUNC coins. The average higher prices.

pre 1920 and post 1930 to1938 is a good range to start on fillers too, and the higher quality the coin the better.

    Hi,
Just a Insight on pre decimal coins. Thou the Greg Mcdonald book is very good, its pretty much just a guild line on what prices a coin should be. Normally if you look at the book for a price of a predecimal coin take around 30% off the price. This will give you a good reasonable price to pay for your predecimals.
    some tips

    1. try to collect your pre decimal coins in Very Fine (VF) - Extra Fine (EF) grades (most affordable and in future most easiest to re sell)
    2. Shop around as prices may differ in different dealers
    3. if you are buying from EBAY make sure you personally have an understanding of grading. As the grades of coins can be very different to what it really are.
    4. Its a great time to pick up the rare Copper Penny coins 1925,1946 penny, these coins have taken a huge hit in price and its just about the right time to pick them up.

P.S if any 1 willing to sell me a REAL 1923 half penny in almost uncirculated condition (aUNC) for $1500 please send me a message :)

    hope this helps

Philski, do you have a 1923 halfpenny that you would like to sell by any chance?
