So I recently picked up these two silver rings that I believe have some age to them..I think the one in the left is amethyst and I'm not sure about the one on the right..maybe jade?. The amethyst ring is simply marked "silver" and the green ring is marked "Sterling silver" does that give any indication on the age? I would like to learn more about jewellery but I'm finding it hard to date things and tell what the stones are without full hallmarks. Any ideas?

    Hard to tell, but...
Re PURPLE STONE, as it appears that facet edges are still sharp, and it looks old, it is probably not paste... Could be spinel, could be quartz:amethyst, could be sapphire. Is it double or single refractive? Could be iolite too... Sorry. Hard to tell.
Re JADE to me it is not jadeite due to quality of the settine, but could be nephrite or even chrysoprase or chalcedony but again hard to tell and i am a bit tired...

Are you in Sydney??. If you are, pm me so we can hook up at jewellers where i work and i can bring my gemmo equipment to try to identify for you.

The green stone could be Amazonite; hard to tell from a photo.
    The purple stone is Amethyst.
Not Chrysoprase or Prehnite for sure.
    Low grade Jade maybe.
Fractures marks don't think it is valuable.
Where did you pick them up from?
Is there a hall marks on them?
Normally jewelleries are made from sterling silver 925
as 999 silver is very soft.

I have interest in Minerals collections from Australia see link-

Thank you for the advice guys and thank you for the offer Shiny! but yes I'm in the UK. how do i tell if its double refractive? sorry im a complete novice with any kind of stones.

I picked these up at a Yardsale for next to nothing so certainly cant lose with these.

This is my latest buy, still waiting for it too arrive, this cost me 12 all in so not dirt cheap like the other two but thought it looked good quality and might make a nice present for my girlfriend. apparently its old...but looks to have full hallmarks so should be able to date it when it arrives.

Well it arrived all safely!:D its a London 1976 mount in a Victorian style, but the stone is indeed a natural amethyst and its huge, using size charts possibly 10ct (its 12mm x 18mm). Im over the moon with it to be honest:).
