Just in case you collect Australian Decimal coins. And, perhaps have heard of the 1992 One Dollar Mob of Roos? Some say the coin does not exist. And its never sighted. One sold yesterday for AU$1000 - AU$1190 inc Buyers Premium. They do exist. I didnt win it, but was pretty darn close. It has a full roo reverse and a partially prepared proof die. so an error / pattern? Ram have 8000 mintage. Its the first one i have ever seen. But, worth looking out for. One may even be in your change right now.
Can you fill us in on the details of the sale?Where and when..I rely on an old copy McDonald Cand B 's ..You might need to email him and help to update the catalogue. Thanks for sharing
Hi sure it was at Downies this week and the auction number is 2493 in decimal errors http://downies.com/aca/PDFs/310/Auction_310_SESSION_6.pdf I asked for a photo only last week but the Auctioneer didnt have the coin on hand. so could only give me a descriptive of it. I have been looking for one for a few years now and that's the very first one i have found. Its not in Mc donalds book or Australian Threepence, etc etc. either so pretty darn rare..
Thought this was pretty much general knowledge as it is quite clearly stated on the RA Mint's web site. http://www.ramint.gov.au/designs/ram-designs/1dollar.cfm Dealers I have spoken to don't know much about this, but now we know it does exist!
So what's the big deal with this 1992 coin compared to the other mob of Roo $1 coins from other years? Please tell me that the only reason this coin fetched $1000 is not because it is one of 8000 that has 1992 written on it?
Lovely 80. This coin being referred to is I think, just an ordinary $1 coin issued to circulate.. not the $1 Kangaroos issued each year with an oz of silver. It is in the same family as the ones you spend each day.. Only difference is this one is proof and maybe none were issued for circulation.. Am I right? Just my thoughts on the matter for I certainly no expert on numismatics! Regards Errol 43
How rare is it? to put it in perspective. This thread is the first genuine sighting of one for sale in the history of the internet, i know of. Or downies or any of the other major auction houses including ebay. Some of the leading coin experts in Australia doubt it exists, its that rare. The proof bit was the icing on the cake.
It sounds like this finding is like a confirmed sighting of the Yeti ..or Loch Ness Monster .........
I asked for one, and got a reply, but they never sent one. They had thousands of things selling at once in a day or so later , so i totally understand. I presume its a pattern coin. That being the case, would be worth $300,000 in 50 years minimum.
I don't believe those 8000 were ever produced, the piece at Downies was a pattern striking similar to the 1977 & 1988 coat of arms fifty cent pieces. I doubt more than 9 or 10 pieces were ever produced. But will $300,000 in 50 years still buy a kilo of silver?
This only feeds my speculation, and also help fool people into investing in my awesome ponzie naked aluminium shorts scheme - go you good thing.
