    French police raid IMF chief Christine Lagarde's Paris home

    French police have raided the Paris home of IMF chief Christine Lagarde in connection with a probe into her handling of a high-profile scandal when she was a government minister.

    The investigation concerns Lagarde's 2007 decision to ask an arbitration panel to rule on a dispute between disgraced tycoon Bernard Tapie and the collapsed bank Credit Lyonnais.

    OT rant, we're going to run out of political leaders one day (or already have).

    Name me one person who has integrity, ability and a desire to lead their country - how many former leaders of countries, states or cities possessed unimpeachable integrity and ability? Integrity in office is one thing (as Christine Lagarde has demonstrated a lack of), but FFS everyone screwes (NZ pun there :p ) up at some stage in their life, shouldn't stop them from taking office if they are capable though.

    Christ, we end up with a mob of KRudds otherwise.

    The catch is the third one: lots of people have integrity and ability but just don't want to have anything to do with the politics and crap needed to get the job.

    And I agree that some standards that "the public" (whoever they are, but it's usually not me) expect of people in certain positions is simply crazy.

    OT some more, has anybody researched where the expression 'tarred with the same brush' comes from?

    "The idiom appears in print first in 1818, in one of Sir Walter Scott's novels, Rob Roy: "They are a' tarr'd wi' the same stick rank Jacobites and Papists."

    Back in the day, tarr'd meant defiled.
    Anybody here want to defile a few politicians with a stick?

    The English were using "Pitchcapping" as a form of punishment on Irish dissedents well before the 1800's though. I read that, while the tar was hot & molten, they would throw a few petty criminals into the que as well. They got the same awful punishment as well...and that's where I read the saying came from.

    What you really mean is that Maggie is way beyond any taint of current circumstances. Maggie is what Maggie does. The proof is in the reality.
