What are they talking about? It has always been this way. Exclusive supply deals to wholesalers in Australia have been in place for decades for just about every kind of item on store shelves - Camera's, car spare parts, watches, you name it. Wholesalers also have exclusivity deals within Australia - They agree to give a certain retailer a "territory" undertaking so that a retailer who gets behind the brand doesn't suddenly find the shop 5 doors down is competing with them on the same product. Whatever. Nice distraction. I would be focusing my attention on the REAL rip-off's that cost us all far more money than a few dollars on a pair of trainers - Bank fees, $800.00 Green Slips, doubling electricity prices, increasing council rates.
There was a related article last week about some fashion chains claiming "success" in having overseas online stores either stop shipping to Australia (when they previously were), or in some cases, just outright jack the prices up if the shipping destination was Australia. Blatant examples of the Australia Tax.
That's messed up. The want to give us Aussies every tax burden they can think of, its as if they don't want us to prosper, be competitive etc. Which reminds me, carbon tax in effect soon
Been happening for years. Idiot companies just had to go and screw it up by yelling it to the media though . Now they have ACCC and angry people on their arse. Many ways to bypass this 'tax' including but not restricted to: Shipito PriceUSA myUS etc...
Just like in the USA the regulators here make a big song and dance about coming down hard on mom-and pop "criminals" but they do nothing about the real criminals in suits that REALLY rip us all off. Oil companies with petrol price fixing. The Grocery Duopoly. Banks with the highest fees in the world. Credit card companies charging 22% interest. Property developer bribery scams. No, much easier to go after a shoe shop.
^ pretty much nailed it, that's exactly how power works. Go after small offenders but don't upset the power structure. Rock the boat to some extent but don't say there's something wrong with the ocean.
