Can someone more knowledgable about US coins please provide some info about this coin (other than its physical dimensions)?

Does it have any numismatic value, rarity, collectability? And what would be a fair price for one in fair/good condition?

Further to the above link, see if there's a mintmark.

I generally use APMEX as a price guide to circulated examples, and figure that they are selling them at "retail" prices, and aim to pay less. Cleaned vs circulated makes a big difference in price - try to avoid cleaned examples of any gold coin unless it's being sold purely as bullion.

The colorised ones they are currently selling look cheap if you know how to strip it off!

It's one of my favourite US gold coin designs - pretty neat incuse minting.

Thanks Lucy and Gold Pelican for the good links and info.

My brother in law (who is not a stacker or into PMs) has one that he wants to sell.

I'm trying to find out what i can about the coin, to help him make an informed decision and make sure he doesn't get ripped off.

I'm always in the market for them. PM pics if available.

I'll post the mintages on Tuesday - my world gold coin book is at the office.

Agree with GP always look for the "D" mintmark mintage on these is around 72K compared to general mintage of the "S" and no mintmark of approx 2.3M
