This picture says it all to me in regards to whether it is a monetary metal :)

I've been thinking exactly the same. Kitco's graphss lately have been showing exactly the same dynamics with gold and silver ie the same pattern of movements in response to good and bad financial news. A lot of people appear to have a vested interest in linking silver to industrial commoditis and arguing its value down while completely ignoring its monetary value. For me, I focus more on its apparently increasing emphasis as a monetary metal. And once this kicks in more, the GSR may then start narrowing.
