I've spent the past few days looking for 2 and 5 oz. 2014 Libertads as singles for sale other than on the bay and with the exception of a German website have found nothing. I remember being able to go to Apmex or Panda America and see current year proofs for sale but not this year. Is it me or are these critters really that rare? Or are dealers sitting on them to see what the mintages turn out to be?
I don't keep up with the silver Libertad proofs, but the gold proofs seem to be more popular this year. Last year, I picked up a 2013 1oz gold Libertad proof for $70-80 over spot on an Apmex sale. This year, they seem to stay out of the 1oz gold proof and bullion versions. Maybe demand is picking up or maybe the mint is producing less coins. Dealers don't make money sitting on inventory. If they are holding out coins, it is to send in for grading.
Apmex will probably not release any they get until they've been cherry picked by NGC; possibly the same with Panda America if they received any this year. I have a feeling that after the mintages are announced, anyone who purchased the 7 coin set early on will be patting themselves on the back. Anyone that sold too early or even worse the few people that actually cancelled their orders because of the delays will likely be kicking themselves. Once we see the mintages, I have a feeling the $300 that the 5oz coins are going for on ebay will look like a bargain. I'm hearing that 2015 could be as bad or worse.
Purchased my first 5 oz silver proof Libertad on ebay from muenzdachs a few weeks ago for $300 US. The same seller has been putting other 2014 5 oz proofs up for auction and last night I had a bid in for $246 US which was the highest bid with about 10 seconds to go. I expected someone might swoop in at the last moment with a bid of $250 US so I was ready to bid $251 with 2 seconds to go and did bid that , but lost out to a higher simultaneous bid at $256. Was bummed, but the next morning I received an offer to purchase another from the same merchant for my bid of $251 US and couldn't resist! *********** Lucky you. And they don't seem to have very many. Last time I checked a minute ago: 2 oz: 4 @ $134 ea 5 oz: 2 @ $486 ea (Yup. That's $486 USD as of a minute ago) Slim pickins.
Or the quantity shown is far less than what they have in stock. Apmex and some other dealers will show limited quantity and then it is magically replenished. The trick is to know when they are faking limited quantity and when they are not faking.
Agree. I'm also factoring in that I don't see them for sale anywhere else than Apmex and the bay as far as availability goes. At least for now.
