This is another of those auction lots I bought recently. This year, 2003, seems to pull in near $100 pretty consistently on ebay. However upon close inspection this one shows a definite misplacement of the selective gold plating. I haven't seen enough of these coins to know whether this is common or not. Any comments? Cheers, Mark.
You might have something extra valuable there! Check this thread for a similar "mistake" Wound up being a very good find ,indeed. http://forums.silverstackers.com/to...e-with-colors-that-dont-match-the-design.html
Any idea what the snake ended up going for? Looks like a good opportunity to flip it, I was a bit reticent about calling it an error coin but, as someone commented on the snake mistake thread, if I had commissioned the work and had it presented thus I'd reject it. Thus it has escaped their quality control procedures. Mark.
Many error coins have become quite collectable..I don't have an eye for them at all.But value is a subjective thing. Many seem to desire the unique . If you check down to page 2 the snake ended at $1005 .00. Go figure!
You can try and flip it on feebay with the words *ERROR* emblazend all over it but you often find some little mistakes here and there on these collector coins. A fella here the other week tried to sell on feebay a 2011 coloured lunar rabbit as an error coin as it had a spot on its colourization, no takers for it. Bung it on feebay at 0.99c and use some of your other accounts to bid it up to like $500 and see if there are any takers at such a whacked out price - or is that cheating?
What the heck, I've thrown it on ebay. We'll see what happens. Here's the link. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110628784417 Mark.
One of the questions put to me on ebay was whether or not the the edge of the coin was gold plated. It turns out that it is plated, but several later such coins I have do not have the edge plating. Intrigued, I found this link: http://www.silverbullionworld.com/kangaroogilded.html "Teething problems" (at RAM) are referred to but I've yet to see any reference to the edges of this coin being gold plated. The manual procedure referred to was apparently prone to error so it stands to reason there would have been some dodgy outcomes but presumably they'd be rejected. Anyone out there have any further insights. Mark.
I think the kangaroo is missing some gold coating on the tips of its tail, feet, and paws... compared to the pic on margeandtina link... correct me if Im wrong
Jakpot, there's definitely missing or misaligned plating on the kangaroo design but I'm now wondering about the edge of the coin. If you look closely at the scan above you can actually see some gold around the edge. In fact the entire edge is gold plated. I have examples of the 2006 and 2007 coins and neither has a plated edge. According to the link above the blanks were plated first and the operator had to align the blank with the die. What happened next I don't know but would love to find out. It may be that the gold was meant to be removed from the edge as well, in which case this is a real anomaly. Again, any thoughts appreciated. Mark.
Hello, I believe that you should have included the following terms in your title for the listing oz, silver Anyways, i will take a first stab on the coin with a bid of $55.00 One recently sold for $128 + $8 for postage http://cgi.ebay.com/2003-GOLD-PLATE...=AU_Coins2&hash=item1e6066fd46#ht_2539wt_1139 see completed listings for (2003) (kang*) in world coins http://completed.shop.ebay.com/Coin..._Blu_ray&_fln=1&_sop=12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m282
I agree THUCYDIDES79, I'm spewin' I neglected to include silver in the description. I made the same mistake with the Ancient Coins set I put up as well. As you say, anyways-here's hoping. Thanks for getting the ball rolling. I'm going to try later on to get some kind of definitive answer regarding the gold plated edge. Mark

Oops, I better move this to Private Message... before the Gold Pelican circles above my old carcass and don't want to give a bad impression to the Forum.
