From the not-so-great photos in this ebay listing, is there any way to tell if these 50's are actually proofs? 110895596262 Krause has the proof mintage as 18,000.
The '66 proofs are frosted relief on mirrored field, a little more "subtle" than modern proofs perhaps, but unmistakeable nonetheless, so as far as I'm concerned, that seller is telling porkies.....
if they were proof coins they would be worth more than the price offered think maybe a sad day for someone purchases them rather than the seller
I don't think they're proofs .... Check out the pics on this page and compare - the frosting on the known proof is quite evident whereas on the ebay ones it's non-existant (of course I could be wrong ).... http://museumvictoria.com.au/collections/items/1129417/proof-coin-50-cents-australia-1966 And some high res images from Sterling Currency... 1966 Proof Strike Obverse 1966 Proof Strike Reverse
So the verdict is highly polished uncirculated 66 50 by the looks of things... I could 00000 polish some fifties for cheaper then $70 each!
I can see swirl marks on the coin in the auction. Where as the one on http://museumvictoria.com.au/collections/items/1129417/proof-coin-50-cents-australia-1966 You can see that it's starting to tone slightly already . In the ebay auction there is no difference between the high & low spots ,which are polished
I wasn't considering buying the 7 x proof coins in this auction, as I would only be interested in 1 anyway. A little piece of history. But it did get me wondering how to tell the difference between UNC and Proof versions. Thanks for the feedback everyone
Hi Guys, I too questioned the authenticity of the coins. I sent the seller an email - requesting more images due to listed coins looking uncirculated and not proof. Seller has finally acknowledged that the coins he has listed on ebay, are actually uncirculated. Claims he made a mistake with listing.....meant to type uncirculated (mmmmmmmmm Ill let you be the judge of that reply..) Just letting you know.....that the coins are not proof. Which most of you picked anyway.
