1952 South Africa £1 Gold - "poor man's KGVI Sovereign"

    Came across this beauty the other day and very stoked to have picked this up.

    South African £1 pound gold coins were struck to the same specs as the gold sovereign. The sovereigns with KGVI were minted in 1937 and command a hefty premium due to its rarity.

    The 1952 South African £1 was also a single year issue with KGVI on the obverse, after a long pause in independent South African gold mintage.

    This is probably the only chance I'll have to own a KGVI "sovereign", and hence I've dubbed this coin the "poor man's KGVI sovereign" :D

    Proof mintage was 12000, unc mintage was 4508
