I picked up this 1937 Crown a while ago and forgot about it. It has what looks to be some sort of delamination or some sort of strike problem, particularly at 1:00 and to a lesser extent at 6:00. Or has it just been mistreated at some point? Thoughts from the SS elders? Thanks EDIT: forgot to mention, the reverse is perfect. Interesting coin - not sure what would have caused it. In case you are sitting on a monster, id suggest for you to become a member and upload the foto on site below http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=65 they have numismatic masters there.
IMHO it looks a lot like electrolytic corrosion, dissimilar metals (Copper or Nickel coins) laying in contact in the presence of moisture. The surface will erode & leave somewhat originally defined detail behind as it has in this picture. A bunch of old shipwreck style 1966 50 cents I purchased had a similar effect. They were sitting for years in a rusted milk tin half full of water. That turned the whole mixture into a battery. They accidentally fell into a melting pot some time later.
Thanks Gents for the responses. I might take up Thucy's suggestion and post a pic on that site. Interesting thought Dyno, maybe!
