Is $180 for a PCGS MS63 1927 Commemorative florin too much? Love the design but think I may have gone over the top!
a bit on the high side but if you like the coin it doesn't matter plus not all ms63's are equal some have more eye appeal. any chance of a pic?
Actually as above... American grading is usually a grade or so above GB commonwealth grading This would be UNC in GB grading so sounds about right... Weather it has been graded correctly is the 64 000 question Me personally... Would not touch a coin like that unless it had a dark natural Patina and heavy toning.. My preference and I don't trust clean coins aka tampered 1for1
Thanks for the replies. I really like the design of the coin so I think I'm happy. The market seems to be flooded with them though.
So hard to tell without seeing it in person but id go aUNC, appears to of had a clean in its lifetime and left side mace looks to have very slight wear on high points.. toning seems to be present around the "hard to clean" legend which is common. So many of these in high grades as a very high percentage were kept as intended and never entered circulation, as a commemorative florin - balancing that out is the fact the coin is considered by many to be the greatest coin design ever.. i personally stack them preferentially over ALL other silver (bullion) but have acquired many in very high grade which are "keepers" 1for1

yeh that coin was a freak event. it has a almost specimen like strike. look at the stairs for instance and the proof like fields i for one think it was an example piece minted to show of the new design then put in circulation. the 1934 florin has this issue recognised and there is variants now recognised by dealers/collectors
That's a nice coin.. Toning is a must.. No tampering.. Who needs a slab.. I can see the details myself agree its aunc because these are so common in high grade the margin or flaws is very minimal after EF.. Very fine hairlines and the slightest of mace wear and rim nickage Would easy grade ms 62 on the crank my yank numi 70 scale
Thanks of the input and advice! Hmm yeah.. I've had a look around at past auction results and it seems a bit high. Do love the coin though. I have a preference for slabbed coins as Im a complete amateur and don't want to get completely ripped off. I did think though that if the coin had been cleaned then the grade would reflect it! Looking to buy a few more pre dec coins anyone have recommendations for undervalued years
The 1936 florin is the easiest to get for a George Fifth in High Grade at the lowest possible cost.. (i try to get a UNC specimen of each type so i can grade accurately.) I always rate the 1910 as its the first year and a 1 year type ie: only year of Edward VII - prices don't really reflect this IMO so i always hoard the 1910 for all silver Australia issues. Also the non-commemorative 1927 is one i look for always as a long term investment.. just the contrarion in me. 1for1

Maybe you paid a little over going rate but it's nicely toned and I wouldn't be too worried. It looks nicely toned and original.

Nice coin. Even though I like some toning, I do like seeing coins (with nice detail) in their original pristine condition.
The 1927 Parliament House florin is certainly a favourite design. Don't think I have anything as nice as that one early in the thread (YET) .. but like to put them away when I find them.
