Alrighty so here I am searching completed listings on eBay 'silver bullion' silver/gold bullion bar' or whatever and there is endless amounts of these classic fakeA$$ bars and coins being sold for $3 $5 $8 winning bids. I'm just sitting here thinking to myself, Who would buy these? people know these are layered hunks of junk yet someone is buying them? these are completely useless to have, no way in hell you could sell them to anyone. I wonder what the people that buy these do with em. Stack em up and play pretend that they are real ? So just a question. Why would anyone intentionally buy a layered item? :/
I've bought some to throw off the balcony while sunbaking and watch people walk by what looks like 1oz of gold, double take, keep walking for a bit and then turn back around to pick it up. Yes, I am easily amused
They are surprisingly popular at one of the coin club's monthly meeting. Usually one or other of the members will have bought a selection of the coins and sells them for about $5 each. No idea what the fascination is...
The only legitimate reason I can think of to buy them would be to use in a dummy safe. In saying that, I reckon tryhards would buy them to try and pass them of as the real deal to impress ignorant friends
Some people here believe our economy will reach the point where barter is the main form of trade. I would be guessing there will be a lot of these floating around when barter becomes the preferred reality. How the average punter know what is legit, and what isn't?
I think the whole idea of dummy safes with dummy bullion is ridiculous. Better off having a honey pot like a cash tin full of change for opportunistic thieves to make off with and be satisfied, rather than alerting them to "hey, now why would they have fake bullion in their safe..." Most break and enters would be opportunistic, e.g. you've left a door or window unlocked overnight or while away from the house, rather than your house being targeted because someone heard you had bullion. Why on earth would you advertise that you had bullion by using dummies? The moment they to sell it they're going to find out - and what's to say that they're not stackers themselves and would just recognise it as fake to begin with?
goldpel, I doubt that most thieves would stop to acid test if gold bullion they found in a safe that they may not realize is a dummy safe was real or not. I think the fake bullion in a dummy safe may be effective for what it's worth. I would imagine that fake gold bullion is a novelty thing for many people who can not afford to buy the real thing. Many people I know actually have little to no expendable money to invest in PM's but some like status symbols. Maybe these are the type of folks buying these fakes....who knows.
Even a dumbarse thief would ask themselves "Why does this person have a dummy safe full of fake crap?"
Then the dumbarse thief would get very p*ssed off for being made a fool of in front of the cute girl at the Gold Buyers kiosk and head back with a sledgehammer and serious intent to get the real stuff. Maybe even payback for the humiliation... Never know
How on earth would a thief know it's a dummy safe?????????? The whole point of having a dummy safe is to make it very convincing otherwise why even bother.
Dummy safe or not, a thief would find out the bullion are fake when trying to resell them and would then think why has someone got fake bullion in their safe?
But what about family? Burglar figures out he got the dummy safe, comes back and finds there's no actual safe or an empty one. Waits for your return and holds family (or household pet if you don't have a family) hostage until you return with PM's... Sounds extreme but quite possible- desperate times calls for depserate measures etc
Unless you too are also on your way to a safer location, you might find yourself in a lot of unnecessary trouble.
