    What would be a fair market value for a raw 1988 1 oz Platinum panda? I've got the opportunity to buy one. It weighs out ok, diameter is good, and looks good under the loupe. My coin guy says there is a coin show coming up where we can get it verified.

    Nice looking coin , your best bet might be to put in a capsule or flip carefully, and send it to NGC for grading . Your killing me with the picture , holding with the dirty thumb, resin, or?:lol:

    my hands were clean. that was an ink stain that wouldn't come off, and I never touched the face although it looked like someone else had. It was in a plastic flip and i wanted to look at it with a loupe (and take photos of it.)

    Anyway, I have the opportunity to buy it at spot plus 2%. I thought that was super low. He probably bought it at spot. The popularity of Pandas is a pretty well kept secret out here. There is a coin show in Dallas two weeks from now and NGC and PCGS will both be there. My coin guy says he can take it there and have it authenticated and graded. I know he'd buy it back from me if it turned out to be bunk we trade all the time and I do some work for him.

    I've got a few pandas in my collection but I don't actually want this coin other than to flip it (to buy other pandas). I guess more accurately the question is, can I make any off of this y'all reckon?
    Forgive my ignorance, because the world of bullion numis coins is way different from older numismatic coins that I am much more comfortable with. I'm trying to learn it a bit better.

    Nice find. Let's say you only grade at PF67. Will you still come out ahead, considering spot + 2% + grade fees? Yes, you will (according to PP).

    As an aside, the current NGC populations for this coin:
    < PF67 = 0
    PF67 = 1
    PF68 = 23
    PF69 = 55
    PF70 = 0

    If have got the cash it is a definite buy. If you are going to sell quickly then you would get it conserved with NCS before NGC grading. There will be buyers. Pre 2000 platinum Pandas are rare.

    If its real, go ahead I am sure you can flip it for more than you paid for if it grades at 67 or higher.

    Hello samboyellowsub,

    If he would buy it back from you if it turned out bunk, and he is selling it to you at spot + 2% than it becomes a NO BRAINER imo wether to buy it or not buy it.

    NGC grading would definately be recommended - even if it comes back with a 'low' grade of 62 - getting it graded by NGC ( or PCGS ) will remove
    doubts of whether the coin is legit or not ! ( The fact that a coin guy is selling it to you at SPOT + 2% is also strange - why isnt he doing it himself?!
    NGC grading will pretty much cost about 2% of price of coin - but the same coin in an NGC slab should cost more than ((SPOT + 2%)+ 2%) - this is
    even if you were not to consider the potential numismatic premiums on top.

    in a nutshell - having it NGCd will remove doubt in the minds of future buyers whether it is legit or not ! And on a Chinese Panda coin 2% on top of spot
    is a bargain buy ( irrespective of whether its Au, Ag, Pt or Pd ).

    calm down everybody ....the bear is genuine, keep your paw prints off it :) just the oil from your skin can leave permanent damage............... its platinum but still it is best not to handle it at all.........it needs conservation to bring out the true beauty the fields are a little hazy

    Yep ,we both did good :) I paid samboyellowsub a good premium that we both agreed upon so he made nice money on a flip:) , and I took a gamble on a coin I thought was worth gambling on: an old man told me once , "the time to buy something rare is when you see it":) that advise has worked well for me..... and for samboyellowsub also so we are both happy
