Back to the Future commemorative coins ready for launch

I purchased two hover-boards because I really like the 2nd Back to the Future film with the Hoverboard. Now I can finally afford to buy a hoverboard that hovers its just not big enough to skate around on yet those are still too pricey and need special floors...

The B2F Hover/Skating scene was my favorite scene of the entire film, and for many others who enjoy skateboarding the hoverboards is more iconic than the car and easier to identify with at a young age if you are already skating versus imagining being able to own and drive a car that time travels. The car is really awesome as well, but it does not display as well as the hoverboard because people are more likely to be razzle dazzled in regards to how the board is defying Lord Gravity. The only gripe I have is when I saw that sometimes the hoverboard gets kinda stuck if its not pushed down evenly on both sides

The build quality looks solid but obviously won't last forever. The low mintage, unique shape & display by not just sitting there stationary it IS hovering is what gave me the impulse to buy. If Perth starts minting more of these it will be extremely upsetting and I won't buy anymore of their "limited" mintage items.

 

Why would they? That would ruin their reputation.
Do they have a history have having done this before?

Yup, but what a ripoff. $280 USD for the board and $180 USD for the delorean.

Having now read that article i would say anyone feeling ripped off is just looking for someone else to blame for their OWN MISTAKES.
A privy DOES MAKE IT A DIFFERENT COIN.
After all, the Australia 1931 florin is the same as the 1932 EXCEPT FOR THE SLIGHT DATE CHANGE.
Does that mean they should have equal value or one devalues the other?
I am betting everyone who made poor purchase choices will say this is somehow different.
The lengths people go to to take the BLAME OFF THEMSELVES

 

I should probably add that , you buy silver for the metal and you buy circulating/ed COINS for investment.
JMHO , but it has served me well.
Any silver that is minted as a round ,bullion or coin (non circulating) is nothing more than a collectible with an intrinsic value.
To buy this stuff as an "investment" hoping for an increase in value ABOVE the metal value would be the same as collecting baseball cards or watches or calculators.
The market runs hot and cold with collectibles and the ONLY RELIABLE VALUE lies in the metal value.
EDIT: I know my view is not popular , but it is safe for me and has worked well for me.
I do buy collectibles , BUT sell back into the market while it is hot and understood.

my red flag was the release of these coins in to buyers hands a month after the day huge red flag but hey at least the kids will get some pressies for Christmas this year that might be worth something some day maybe!!

I hate it when these government mints (who you think should be held to a higher standard) lure in customers by declaring mint supply amounts; only to make a single & slight change i.e privy marks and the like, then release more of the same coin with 99.9% of the same exact design & the mints get away with devaluing the coins originally sold without the slight changes and misleading customers in regards to the actual supply/amount minted of the coin with the 99.9% similar design.

It is done to so that the mint makes money after misleading customers in regards to the supply amount.

There is a valid reason to be upset.

I would feel extremely ripped off if the Perth Mint started releasing Privy versions of the Hoverboard. Would you feel misled? How do you think it would effect the values of the original Hoverboards without the slight change I.e privy mark? What if they make even less of the hoverboard privy? Is that ok? Which would you rather have? Me personally the rare hoverboard privy!

I never thought this might happen, but after reading this article I fear it may.

Now if the Perth Mint decides for whatever reason to mint another hoverboard series next year. I have no problem with that what so ever. I am used to government mints making a coin year after year and changing the date because it is to be expected.

Transformers movies are still being released. BTTF was a trilogy from the 1980s. I don't see any similarity.

 

I can't think of a comparable situation. With no more BTTF movie sequals planned, this appears to be a one off event. The coins were brilliantly packaged and marketed, but I don't see any future events that would maintain interest in the coins. I know there will be movie anniversaries, but the next main one is 20 years away.

 

Yep.. I definitely think this coin while cool and well marketed isn't a keeper for me personally. Just turning them over before christmas.
