I also saw a cheaper version of this, but only for gold coins... http://www.goldcoinbalance.com/ Do they make something similar for silver coins out there?
See Maggie in the Site Sponsors. A very reputable dealer, she has some very neat little scales for sale that weigh in oz-toz-gn-gram-tael.
I don't know about a cheaper option, but Fisch do make their gauges for silver coins as well; their 'wallet #6' option contains four plastic gauges [what they call 'detectors'] and covers 1 Oz Silver Eagles, Silver Maple Leafs and Silver Vienna Philharmonics. They are kind of expensive though. But if they give people peace of mind... http://www.thefisch.com/ordernow.html#products
hi sinistersix, which city are you in? well my idea (may be the cheapest way) is go to your local bullion dealer place to check if they have a XRF analyzer, ask them nicely to see if they can do test for your metals.
I have used the magnet test and for me it has worked everytime. It has not failed to spot any of the known fake coins I have tested.
