Hypothetically, if you had $100,000 to spend on gold, what would you buy and why?

Suggesting you already have a large silver stash & don't want any more silver.

Also taking into account the many & varied fake gold bars/coins that are now turning up.

Not something I'd touch personally. Those bars (with kangaroo backing) have known fakes floating around.

Really mate; you have more chance of getting a bonk from Elizabeth Taylor than getting a fake from an authorised dealer.

Show me a single SS member that has a fake oz certi card from an authorised dealer??? Just doesn't happen and if you were that concerned just buy directly from The Perth Mint. ;) :)

On the premise that have significant silver including fractional then:
$100k = 1kg bar plus rest in mixture of 20g-100g bars (e.g. maybe 10x20g + 10x50g + whatever to make up the rest)

Just get stuff easily XRF'd/Sonic tested by Goldstackers.

No need to wait a couple of years; they are doing it now.
I picked these up from a gold merchant a couple of months ago and he owns an XRF machine
For anyone who trusts an XRF machine implicitly just test your silver cladded Kennedy Half Dollar that's 40% ASW on one of these machines. It will show that it's .900 fine silver :(

I can't remember if you've already discussed these ones, but what twigged you to the fact that they were fakes?

The gold bars are not fakes; just saying that some dealers will remove them from their certicards for a closer inspection. I have bought quite a few over the past few years that was removed from the certicard by bullion dealers who wanted to be 100% sure that the product was kosher.
As for the 40% Kennedy Half Dollars it seems the XRF is unable to penetrate deep enough to reach the copper core.

That's a big amount and will get me huge discounts on large orders of gold bars and coins. I would strictly buy directly from the mint or from an authorized, genuine dealer (if I find one).

I would buy an RSC membership for The Missus and myself and spend the remaining $90,000 with them. Rock solid investment

Well if you had enough silver, your liquidity is covered - so go big.

Couple of kilo bars, or anything in the 100g-10oz range. Liquid enough with low premiums. Figure on selling back to a dealer in those quantities.

I would avoid the 1oz certicards for 100k purchase - they're actually quite bulky in volume. Cast bars in your preferred size, or 100g/10oz certicards.

Don't know how the sale is going but remember liquidity in all your purchases. You may not think you need it at the time of purchase but life is an expert at throwing perfect curve balls at both ends of the spectrum EI: misfortune or opportunity and either one could either pass you buy or demand a sort of instant response. And although we all dream of a "too Da Moon" ending could you imagine trying to unload the above in a hurry if needed at prices two, three or five times the above in the same sort of market circumstance after such a rise? Yeah I know horrible circumstance to be in right ? But what if it was a hot market tip you could of cashed in on a day ago or a fiat payment that had to be made on that date or else ?

    Just saying.

Edited to add: (MMmmmm wonder what the missus would think about saving the planet, and bussing it to work ??? ) Q: How do you fit a Subaru outback in your pocket ? ;)
