This dude melts down some nuggets into bars http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20TPN2pRBIU&list=UU-Mz3PpXKFGncYv75ymve-A&index=5&feature=plcp
I have a few regular coin and bar molds and will order different shapes as soon as I get the furnace or torch. How did you melt down the sterling?
Hey Hey Hey Here is the thread that Rinchin was talking about --->> http://forums.silverstackers.com/topic-25556-home-made-silver.html I enjoy these threads so I'll try and contribute to them as much as I can. =) scratched up some Quick snaps from when I tried to make a bar, please excuse the quality of the pics as they were taken with a very wet and shaky hand from a camera phone. Ok this one is just a test pour that worked out real nice with nice swirls. This one is a test stamp to get a feel for the stamps, they are very very hard to stamp even remotely straight with single stamps. :/  This is the final bar its been polished more then this now its super shiny.
Really beautiful stuff Bazil and Rinchin... You've inspired me to have a go, but I'll have to source some silver that I don't mind melting first.
Rinchin, I love the triangle, where did you get the mold for that? I am trying to source some silver to melt down as we speak . . now I just need to figure out what I am doing!! Haha, anyone want to give some tips on melting/stamping it? Thanks!
Here is a tip for melting silver, you'll have to heat it to at least 962 degrees celsius or 1764 degrees fahrenheit. Not an easy task... Also don't spill it, it's valuable!
Yeah, it looks like I am going to need to source some torches . . . Orrr, see if there is a setting on my oven for 1764 I like that little furnace that Silver Addict has over on the BS site. I will have to start out and see if I even enjoy doing it. Then again, I better keep a bucket of water, some butter and a burn kit nearby!
To be honest there is nothing quite like handling liquid metal, and I don't mean mercury. Last time we fired up the furnace it was at dusk, and pulling out a glowing crucible and pouring out metal is quite a spectacle. (and no, I haven't melted silver yet). I recommend starting out with a torch though, and a small quantity of silver, that way if you stuff something up, your loss is minimised.
Levant, Thank you for the tips, and I am going to start small, just I am a weird planner that likes to have all my ducks in a row before starting, because I HATE to start something and have to stop 15min in to order something that will take 5 days to get to me. So, trying to line those duckies up right . . . I know there will be hiccups, but I like having the tools I will need.
I'm with you there, I have everything but the heat o smelt. Once I have that I'd be willing to do some swaps if any one is interested? Does anyone know where to get the dies made to stamp logos or brands?
Hey guys, we do indeed sell silver granule, just please note that silver granule isn't considered an investment so there will be 10% GST on top of our listed prices (this applies to anywhere else you buy granule too). Just make sure you start with a small bar, we tried making a large one once and it turned out terrible
Hmmm, my wood fired pizza oven gets up into the 900s in the dome apparently, and it's not like I want to use it to cook pizza every night. I have a new infra-red thermometer on its way, I really must see how hot it gets up there. My current one craps-out above 550C.
Thanks that's something I didn't know. I only have 2 and 1 oz bar molds and 1 1/2 and 1/4 round molds. Is there a store in Australia that sells the letter stamps or will make custome stamps? I've been looking on gum tree and trading post for a kiln but they all say they need to be wired up? Is that how yours is Maggie?
I am still trying to find some granules or dinged bars at spot and not having any luck. I REALLY don't want to have to melt down parts of my current stack. I Think my SilverTowne bars were the closest to spot I ever got, but still, they are at a premium.
Ryaneod, you need to get some granules ask David. I am pretty sure Apmex sell granules Sa bogan, The kiln is wired for 3 phase power and it is gas also.
