The problem with that is that it is co-mingled storage, and bank staff will be physically able to access your box (and feel how heavy it is) - nothing to stop it being "lost" one day.
That sounds quite scary. Do you personally know of any incidents like this? Also, how much of PM (in $) would you recommend to keep at one location?
Not aware of it happening from banks... but I see it as a risk. Do a search on Kennards on here though Advertised safe deposit service that wasn't.
Whooops! "In one case, which the report says "reinforces the importance of promptly notifying customers of loss of their personal property", the ANZ lost a customer's safety deposit box containing gold bullion, jewellery and coins. A number of boxes had been lost after a branch closure, but staff did not notify customers for several months, then did not apologise and denied liability. Mr Robinson had negotiated a settlement." source: http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/11/10/1068329488445.html?from=storyrhs
I just set up a safe deposit box with the NAB in sydney. Dual-key, private box, not just some space in a vault. It sounded like they have a bunch available. Their price list ranged from $130p/a to $700p/a, but for NAB customers only. I think i'll move everything to Guardian Vaults once they come to Sydney - security procedures seemed pretty average at NAB. Still, better than being in a shoebox at my house though
Thanks for the info. I visited a couple of CBA branches and they have the same range of prices. Even though in some of them there are no available boxes at all, so there is a long waiting list.
CBA and ANZ banks have deposit boxes in Martin Place. I was in the ANZ barnch (20 Martin Place) a few weeks ago enquiring about prices. After going down several floors i was given a slip of paper which had the following box sizes and annual charges. LxWxH (cm) 45.5x12x4.5 => $100 45.5x12.5x8.5 => $150 53.5x11.5x11.5 => $200 53.5x24.5x6.5 => $200 45.5x28x8.5 => $300 45.5x28x18 => $400 51x39x42 => $500 76x45x30 => $700 51x38x84 => $1,000 They told me to come back in February as they had no spare boxes (and they wern't event taking names).
Thanks for the info. I visited CBA in Martin Place some time ago. I've got similar procelist. Unfortunately, they don't have spare boxes at least until March.
