I thought that pm's from overseas were tax free How come eBay's "international import programme" charges import regardless if over $1000 So tax is not due I'm guessing eBay is lining their pockets with this money
There are several requirements for it to be GST free, also Customs want to charge the GST regardless if over $1000 unless you have an ABN. eBay would have got it's directions from Customs and they can be hit and miss with GST on bullion, most of the time they hold you metal hostage and say that if you are not a bullion dealer then you need to pay GST on the import regardless. Only thing you can do it keep it under $1000 or pay a Lawyer to fight it.
You have if the other way around I've bought of apmex and Liberty coin I fill out a declaration form that I'm not a bullion dealer and thus I get the coins gst free I'm with beyond first eBay do a deal with PayPal to rid all competition for them and line their pockets with money, they're just manipulating the system to make themselves richer I can't believe eBay is allowed to get away with these things
I don't know about eBay or pay pal, but if you import goods privately over $1000 you have to fill out the import declaration form that include the Tariff classification of the goods. If that is GST free you pay nothing for GST. http://www.border.gov.au/Importingandbuyinggoodsfromoverseas/Documents/importdeclarationsweb.pdf
Sorry if this sounds dumb... What are the steps for ordering from a dealer like APMEX as far as filling the "import declaration form"? Does the seller ship and then the item gets stuck somewhere at customs? And how do you go about sending them the form and getting them to release the item? How does the item get shipped from customs to you? Or do you have to go to some customs office and handle this in person? Once again, I am a novice, so apologies if these are extremely basic questions.
I think this is the form I had to fill out. I had to pick it up from custom, except once when it was delivered to my address probably by mistake; despite it was a lager order. They should send you a notice of arrival, with some smaller clearance fee. https://www.border.gov.au/Importing...b374-importdeclaration-goodn10post_submit.pdf
Normally the parcel arrives to Sydney first if ordered form Brisbane and sent to the closest custom office where the postal address is located. In Brisbane they are, or used to be around the airport. You can fill out the form at that site.
Just buy from apmex and they send you a email with the form to fill out Print it out fill it out and scan it back to them When the goods arrive you'll get a call asking you if you are a dealer just say no They'll asked you to pay a small fee about $87 pay it and that's all there is to it
In fact I found it more tricky to pay them since they no longer accept credit cards but once I did I just saved them in my payee list
Thanks so much for the helpful answers, everyone. Looks like the process isn't as complicated as I was making it out to be, thankfully!
I neve bought from APMEX directly since they have free postage within the US where I have someone to forward goods to me.
Just resurrecting this thread since I have a couple questions I thought I might ask here: 1. If I buy a bullion coin from the UK Royal Mint that is less than AUD 1,000, let's say the 1/4 oz queen's beasts (value GBP 310), will I have to pay any additional GST or fees here? I assume no GST, but maybe fees for releasing the coin from customs? 2. If I buy a bullion coin from the UK Royal Mint that is less than AUD 1,000, let's say the bullion sovereign (value GBP 266), I will have to pay GST because of the gold content, right? And also fees for releasing the coin from customs? 3. If I buy a PROOF coin from the UK Royal Mint that is less than AUD 1,000, let's say the 2016 proof half-sovereign (value GBP 225), GST and fees will be same as #2 right? Thanks so much.

Just cancel the Ebay trade, since you never agree to pay GST to eBay, you need to pay to your customs.

Not after June 30. At the moment, purchases online from overseas vendors do not a 10% GST loading as long as they are under $1000 AUD. That is changing in the new financial year. https://www.etax.com.au/proposed-gst-changes/
I think the "Netflix tax" is specifically aimed at digital goods purchased that didn't attract GST before
