There were some rather unpleasant replies to a simple question about the new Englehard bar. Why all the bullshitting around? The thread where faulty bars were discovered was closed after ridiculous and ambiguous replies that at least eventually led to a simple answer. Wouldn't it have been better to be upfront to start with? This sort of thing breeds lingering distrust and doesn't reflect well on those involved.
Thanks. It was just a bit strange that it was so difficult to get, what was ultimately, a very simple answer. It could have been resolved easily enough early on. _
Simple cheap scales! My scales show one bar under and one bar over I too have cheap scales. How many times do you read "what does it weigh" on asking advise about possible suspect items? but given most people only have cheap scales anyway then this is totally useless advise when you relate the same advise to a brand new product many pm dealers and flippers have a "vested" interest in! this is when you hear cries of "your scales are not good enough to weigh pm,s" simples. lol
I been buying small jewerly items and stones lately and didn't know if I can trust my cheap 0.01 scales so I just ordered 3 other different brand cheap scales in the hope I can go by averages. Cost around $40 for the 3 so just weighting for them to come from China.
Cheap or expensive is (almost) completely irrelevant. You have to calibrate!!!!!!! And you have to bracket the range over which you intend to measure. The major difference you may find between cheap and expensive is that the expensive has adjustment capability that allows you to tweak the readings in line with calibration. Don't waste your money on getting too-expensive scales, but rather go buy a good set of calibrated weights and calibrate a cheaper set of scales. I know of many IDIOTS in the research field who believe that the more they spend on equipment the better, but then don't do proper maintenance and calibration. You can buy a reasonable 4 decimal place analytical balance for under $2k, but still, the moment you take it out of the box, you have to calibrate to ensure that the thing is working correctly. (PS - I have a PhD in analytical chemistry - I know about weighing things )
It seems like there should be a club that could buy stuff like scales and XRF equipment and such so members can meet and test their items. Some LCS offer the service but there is an exoectation that you will trade with them if you use their stuff.
There are 4-6 XRF in Perth, that can sometimes be use free. You just need to be diplomat when and how to used them. For calibrated scales, yours LPO do have them. I normally uses my personal pocket scales, they are not too bad for my parcels usage. Just double check again at my LPO. FYI
I always believed that Post Office scales were calibrated in there favour, same as point to point airlines! the luggage that weighs under 20kg on a full service airline always seems to weigh over 20kg if you need to use point to point for a connection or final destination.
Careful with all them scales because if discovered in your possession by the authorities you will be deemed guilty until you can prove your innocence! lol
