Is it really a debt ceiling if you just keep raising it?

A ceiling is but merely a floor to a higher level.

I was always taught and teach my kids that DEBT is not a good thing.Pay bills before they get out of hand, dont get into more debt to pay those bills, (or as from now that would be tap into federal retirement funds)Sure there are those who can get DEBT to work for them but for a simple man like me i think paying your bills is a must.Had the US had this attitude it wouldnt be in the strife its in.Not rocket science really.
Surely every politician taking a small wage decrease adds up?
Yea I know thats the stuff fairytales are made of :)

Socialist governments will always steal money to keep themselves going, just look at Gillard and the new buget- 'everyone needs to benefit from the mining boom' - so in other words - companies pay the exploration/discovery/development costs government takes the benefits.

Totally irrelevant, but I misread the thread title as "U.S. hits debt ceiling Ouch"

You may be right there to some degree, but I would say that people in most parts of Africa would not agree.

On the debt ceiling, the fact gold has not risen over the last few weeks shows the amount of manipulation that is present by most central banks. If Gold rises their currencies become less and less attractive, its a sham I say.

yes, socialism is a slippery slope... but the initial (and often successful) sales pitch governments employ one of socialistic redistribution.... all governments are rooted from it.

I dont believe that to be true, Socialism is a specific ideology. I do agree that the people have been conditioned to keep their hands out demanding the government (giver-ment) pay them - so conservative or capitalist governments (in a way) must be somewhat socialist in order to gain power. But i dont agree that all governments are socialist

Governments tend toward whatever system provides more general stability and thus keeps them safer in power.

At this point in time, a fair degree of socialism is required for political stability. Like it or not.
