Looks like unlimited mintage, a 22mm, 7.76g, 0.999 silver coin made of silver recovered from the wreck. Merit Gold have a great page. Source: http://agaunews.com/new-release-ss-gairsoppa-brittania-from-shipwreck-silver/
A novel idea, and a nice looking coin. But I will have to see what the Royal Mint charges for these before deciding if they are worthwhile or not.
so, 1/4 oz BU, unlimited mintage, unique history attached..... any other mint in the world would price this for, say, 13 euro. The royal mint, the most expensive in the world, will probably stick a price tag of 25 euro.
Surely it will be limited in mintage by the volume of silver recovered from the wreck. Otherwise linking this to the wreck is just marketing.
I think they recovered around 110 tons of silver from the wreck in total. One short ton is 32,000 ounces. So you could bust through a million of these Britannias with just 8 tons.
There are several threads here on SS about the wreck and silver recovery (search for 'Gairsoppa'); here's one of the bars: [imgz=http://forums.silverstackers.com/uploads/6008_gairsoppa-project-silver-bar.jpg][/imgz]
I would rather have one of the bars than a coin made from the silver of one of the bars, nice looking coin though.
Nice looking coin with the added bonus of some history. No doubt a massive mintage. Still won't be able to help myself though
Does anyone know any dealers in AUS that will be getting these? Unfortunately, Maggie didn't get enough people expressing their interest.
