    Hi folks

My first post here so greetings to all.

I've had a few of the Series 1 2 ounce Proofs in storage, and I notices this sight had a fair interest in the Lunar Coins. They are absolutely lovely coins so that is no surprise.
I'm wondering a couple of things and I hope some may point me in the right direction...

    1) Is it still possible to obtain a presentation / display case for the 2 oz coins?
    2) Are the Proof coins reasonably well obtainable?
    3) Is the market value of the Proof coins more or less similar over the 12 issues (I guess I'd expect some premium for the older)?
    4) how does the valuation compare to the bullion coins?

It's great there is such interest in these very appealing coins, appreciate any info that can be provided.

    Cheers
    Pitto

    Hi, and welcome Pitto.

My opinions are below, others may disagree.

    1) Is it still possible to obtain a presentation / display case for the 2 oz coins?

Series 1 2oz? Will be tough. Call the Perth Mint Retail Store, they might be able to help.

    2) Are the Proof coins reasonably well obtainable?

Series 1, no. They are reasonably hard to get a hold of.

    3) Is the market value of the Proof coins more or less similar over the 12 issues (I guess I'd expect some premium for the older)?

Really depends on the popularity of the coin. For example, S1 Dragon proofs sell for more than S1 proofs of other years.

    4) how does the valuation compare to the bullion coins?

More favourably :) You will see S1 Dragon 1oz proofs selling for around $300-400, whereas the bullion sells for around $100.

Thanks so much for the quick replys.

I have 8 of the 12 so if I can get a case I may try to finish the set......will need to consider my options for sure.... I guess there is no hurry

gee, I reckon the 12 2ozs would look absolutely fabulous together in a nice case...

it's very interesting how popularity is the governing factor, not necessarily the mintages

Are you sure you have 2oz proofs ?

If they are proofs they will have come with individual cases and certs.

.... Unless they were pulled from 3-coin or 5-coin sets.

I have a few of the 2oz series 1 lunars. They should come in packaging etc exactly the same as a 1oz proof just larger of course.

Yes, definitely proofs in their own individual cases with COA's. I recall being disapointed that the PM couldn't keep the packaging consisent for all the coins.
I've had no luck in researching availability of 12 coin 20z display cases. (Would an ideal display case would have room underneath for the individual cases etc).
Anyway thanks for the replies, I guess I'll just bide my time with these.......

Don't bother trying to find a display case, unless it is for your own enjoyment of your collection.

They are most valuable with their original cases with COA.

^^^ Agreed. But you can keep the boxes & coa's tucked away empty and put your proofs in a display box so later you can sell in the display box or with the coa's/boxes.

Thanks, the original boxes, COA's etc would certainly be kept for later sale.

I originally chose to collect the 2oz Proofs over the 1oz as I thought they might be that little bit extra special.
I'm thankful for the links I found here on Silver Stackers to the Perth Mint mintage information. I've collated the info for the 2oz proofs here.

    Year Sign Mintage Sales
    1999 Rabbit 1000 424
    2000 Dragon 1000 838
    2001 Snake 1000 939
    2002 Horse 1000 772
    2003 Goat 1000 417
    2004 Monkey 1000 264
    2005 Rooster 1000 262
    2006 Dog 1000 688
    2007 Pig 1000 369
    2008 Mouse 1000 136
    2009 Ox 1000 171
    2010 Tiger 1000 287

Can somebody please conform for me what happens to the unsold mintage, i.e. is it melted down?

If that is the case then according to the above figures it is only possible for 136 full 12 coins sets to exist.

For me that is a great incentive to complete the Proof Set.

    Cheers
    Pitto

^ someone could take a 2 ounce proof out of a 3 coin set, so the number of 2oz proofs in existence is the figures you have listed plus however many 3 coin proof sets were struck each year.

interesting point, do you know if the 2oz coins in the 3 and 5 coin sets have individual boxes, display cases and COA's?

would seem a good way to trash a 3 and 5 coin set.....

    Hello everybody

I posted last year how I had most of the Series 1 2oz Proofs and was looking to complete the set and also obtain a presentation box.

Well, mission accomplished , phew and yay! :)

The Presentation Box was sourced from Germany (via eBay) and is a nice product. They have quite a few other boxes as well for both gold and silver coins.
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/320914085402?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

So, the coins are in the presentation box for viewing and I have the cases (and their sleeves/boxes) and COA's handy for when they are needed.

For interest and posterity, I thought I would include a few photos (I am sure everyone would know the difficulties of photographing shiny proof coins!)

    The Presentation Box

I sold a Tiger 2oz proof just recently for $600 and a 1oz proof Tiger for about $300. I also have a 2oz proof pig, Ox, rat and dog - but I havent found a home for them yet in the $400's range. This is despite the fact in the 2oz the Ox had a much smaller mintage than a 2oz Dragon which would probably have a market value of $600 odd.

Wow, what a beautiful set, should be worth a fortune!

Now you should try to get the 1oz and 1/2 oz sets completed as well.
